Replacement Handles For Windows

Window handles are among the most frequently used elements of double-glazed windows. Over time, they can be worn out or rusty.

You will need to know your current handle's length of the spindle and its fixings in order to replace it. The best way to determine this is by looking at the base of the handle you have previously replaced.

Handle

Over time upvc chrome door handles handles and window locks can be damaged by wear and tear or by accidental or deliberate damage. This can mean that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close, or it's not locked in any way. If this happens it may be tempting to replace the entire window unit, but this isn't always necessary. The espagnolette style is the most well-known uPVC window handle. The handle comes with a spindle that protrudes from the handle. It is inserted into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking system within the window. It is a good idea to replace a uPVC handle to cover the screws to shield the screws from rust and ensure they remain secure. You can also use a washer, spacer or another sealant to make a more secure fit. A screw cap will prevent debris and water from entering the handle, which can cause damage.

After the handle has been removed from the window, it's an ideal idea to scrub the spindle of the new handle as well as the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle is fitted and functions well, and it can also help stop dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

It's now time to put in the new uPVC handle. It's important that you follow the directions provided with the new handle and also to look at your old one prior to starting to have an idea of the correct way to go about it. It's also important to note that if you're replacing a uPVC cockspur handle (also known as an Espag handle) you must check the step height of the window in order to determine the appropriate size of handle. The steps height is the distance between the base of the window and the place where the handle of the cockspur is.

Hinges

The hinges may not be in line with the window frame if your windows start to close and open with a visible space. It is usually a simple fix that can be solved with a set of replacement hinges. We have a variety of different options, and can even customize the size of the hinges to fit your needs.

We can supply different types of hinges for upvc and timber windows. They are available in a range of colors that match your existing window frames and come with all fixings required to install. If you have a double-glazed window that has an older style of hinge, we are able to offer a selection of repair screw packs which allow you to cut the thread from the previous form back into the frame.

We have a variety of hinge types. This includes standard casement hinges, which can be used in conjunction with a tilt and turn handle or a normal handle and the fire escape egress sash hinges, which are designed for larger side hung windows. These hinges are designed to fully open in a crisis and have an easy-cleaning position. We also stock hinges that are restricted in egress and are designed to restrict the opening angle of the window to a maximum of 100mm perfect for families with children.

A squeaky hinge could be an indication that hinges are wearing out, which is typically due to the friction of metal against. A small drop of lubricant might help, but when the noise continues to recur, it is likely that the hinges will need to be replaced.

This is due to plumb windows being in a position to avoid binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame, and the window will open and close properly. If a window is not plumb, it might have trouble closing and opening or becoming damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

You can buy replacement upvc windows hinges in imperial or metric sizes. In general, the metric sizes are a little more precise, however this isn't really evident once they are installed. The first corner holes on the track are standard, but the other holes can differ based on the hardware used originally. We suggest that you take measurements of the holes in your frame prior to purchasing any hinges made of upvc in order to be sure that they are the correct size.

Crank

Over time, normal wear and tear can cause damage to your window handle the lock, crank mechanism or even the handle. This can affect the ease of opening and closing your windows as well as compromising their security. If you notice that your window is difficult to open or close, or if you hear a click sound when you turn the handle, it may be an indication that you have to replace the crank mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window or the multipoint locks is broken, then it might be worth replacing this part as well.

A new window crank is able to be replaced with little effort, but it's important to make sure you buy the right size replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same height as your old one that can be established by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch on the track across the bottom of the window frame. Alternately, you can take a measurement of the length of the spindle that is on your existing handle to determine the size you will need for a replacement handles for windows.

The type of handle you choose for your window will determine the kind of crank mechanism required for your casement and windows with awnings. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle on their back that is attached to the frame of the window and drives the window mechanism, while cockspur handles for internal bifold doors feature pegs that are held in place by screws of three or four that are inserted into the sash and frame.

It's easy to replace your window operator after you've found the appropriate replacement. Remove any trim mounting screws from the casement cover, and carefully lift the cover to reveal the innards of the window operator (Photo 1). Remove any rusted trim screws and then compare the new operating lever with the old to make sure they are in line. Then, screw the new lever to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and place the casement cover back over the mechanism.
